ABOUT

“Everyone is interested in language.”

Founded by linguist and author Paul Anthony Jones, Haggard Hawks is a language blog and social media feed that has shared over 45,000 obscure words and etymologies since 2013.

Haggard Hawks’ aim is to celebrate our language in as fun and as accessible a way as possible, as a means of encouraging a wider interest in linguistics. That could involve playing word games and quizzes, sharing language facts and trivia, or else reviving forgotten words—showing how they could still be used or made relevant today, were we only to know them—and exploring their histories and etymologies.

Social media accounts dedicated to unusual words are by no means rare these days, but many tend to recycle the same material (and a great many more prioritize virality over accuracy). In that respect, Haggard Hawks also aims to bring a scholarly approach to a topic often handled all too frivolously online, while still keeping the information clear and understandable to everyone.

Alongside the Haggard Hawks blog and social media feeds, Paul Anthony Jones has also written an acclaimed series of language books, including Around the World in 80 WordsWhy is This a Question? and A Winter Dictionary.
